Canine Epilepsy
Jono | September 12, 2008Last Friday night, I could hear a noise, I went out to see what my beagle was up to, to find that he was convulsing. He was foaming at the mouth, and was unconcious. Luckily, I used to work with people with intellectual disabilities, and seen many epileptic seizures. I held him for the remaining minute that he convulsed, and then sat there petting him as he lay stil for a further two minutes before coming round. My very confused and frightened beagle then ran into my room, and barked for about 20 minutes, he would not let anyone near him, warning us with barks and growls. We left him in there with the door open until he decided to approach us. The after hours vet told me that it may be a one-off, but the vet I took him to the next day said he may have juvenile epilepsy. Does anyone else reading this have a pet with epilepsy? Please tell me your experiences.

Quick story about siezures....I have 3 beagles - 2 i
Hounddog | March 14, 2009Quick story about siezures….I have 3 beagles - 2 i owned from pup, the other i introduced this past fall. He was about 11 months old. Once afternoon, one of my older (8yr) beagles was siezing for the first time in the back yard. I immediately took him to the vet who explained that beagles in their latter years are prone to siezures. After an hour visit, i took him home and as i was putting him in his kennel, my newest pup began to sieze. I immediately ran him over to the vet, who now suspected poisons of some kind…fertillizer, mulch, wild mushroom……this went on for about a week, where, two of my three continued to have small, 3 minute siezures. After carefully watching them for a day, I found that two of the three were eating the hard casings off of the black walnuts that were falling from the trees. These are potentially lethal if they get enough. The female found no like in them, and thus was not involved. The puppy actually had them lodged in his bowels and the shells produce a toxic acid when in their stomachs. Don’t rule out potential hazzards in the yard as that could be the cause.
